Edinburgh’s Craigmillar Castle

I recently wrote a post on the panoramic view of Craigmillar Castle. As it is Thursday, as part of #ThrowBackThursday, I thought I would search my archives for photos I took of that castle! These were taken in January 2020, just before COVID lockdown.

Craigmillar Castle Entrance

It truly is a hidden gem! I would venture to say that of the four castles I know of in Edinburgh, Craigmillar castle is a good second to Edinburgh Castle.

As you walk towards the castle, you definitely get a sense of grandeur. It is quite an imposing structure.

The grounds by the entrance

The lands upon which this castle stands were granted to the monks of Dunfermline Abbey in the 12th century. The castle was built in the 14h century.

It is well documented that Queen Mary stayed at the castle on at least two occasions. As you enter the castle’s courtyard you cannot miss the trees; two yews. It is thought that one is connected with Queen Mary’s visit. Quite incredible. Wow! If trees could talk.

I remember slowly climbing the stairs to the rooms but I am struggling to remember the layout. I need to visit again to get better acquainted.

However, I do remember the view! It was wonderful.

Climb to the top of the castle

Another visit is definitely required. It is on my list!

The Ride to Hunter’s Tryst in Edinburgh

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a tendency to hop onto a bus and ride it to the end. This was one of those occasions. Apparently, my destination was Hunter’s Tryst on Bus route 5

It was a really pleasant ride. Quite frankly any ride that takes you through Morningside is lovely.

Morningside Station Clock and Station stop

This blog post is really to show part of the ride and give a sense of this lovely city and capital away from the centre. It really is quite scenic.

Part of the ride to Hunter’s Tryst

When many think of Edinburgh, the Old Town, New Town and the castle come to mind. As lovely as those areas are, there is so much more. These photos represent an alternative view of the Bonnie capital. Look how pretty it is! Even in Winter!

More on Those Edinburgh’s Southside Treasures

I recently posted regarding the East Crosscauseway building treasure.

I received a lot of feedback since that post and I also learned a great deal. As a result, I thought I would take another photo from a different perspective.

I took this photo as it shows the building from the corner of Howden and East Crosscauseway. It is so grand- well I think so 🙌🏾 Again, so easily missed. I never knew this was once the hub for the Jewish community. Wonderful.

The other building that consistently catches my eye in Edinburgh’s Southside, is the Green Mantle.

Another listed building with a presence. On this particular evening, I thought it really stood out and so I had to take a pic. It is located on the corner of West Crosscauseway

Panoramic View of Craigmillar Castle

A short note today. I just had to share. I ventured out to Little France Park in Edinburgh as part of a group walk. It was windy and very much on the cold side!

But this majestic view of Craigmillar castle made it worth it!

Even with all the foliage stripped back, it still had amazing presence. Just saying.

Don’t you think so?

Stockbridge Pharmacy building in Edinburgh

There are many popular, photogenic spots in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. It is a favourite spot for photographers. However, now when I think about it, I rarely see photos of the Stockbridge Pharmacy building.

I’m not sure why not; it’s a beautiful building! So, I had to take a few pics! I wish I knew the purpose of the window in the chimney stacks.

The workmanship is outstanding. The detail and quality are amazing.

I also took a quick look inside.

The interior ceilings were equally amazing. A feast for the eyes.

Another Scottish hidden pearl but this one is hiding in plain sight.

Tea at Dalkeith Country Estate

It was time for a walk, so off I went.

I walked right onto a bus and just like that I found myself in front of Dalkeith Country Estate. LoL! Well having made the trip, it seemed fitting to treat myself to a cream scone and tea.

I took the short trail to Restoration Yard which constitutes “a walk”. Right?

As I made my way to the restaurant, I noticed Dalkeith Palace in the distance. It looked so picturesque.

I have to say, the grounds are delightful.

The trail to Restoration Yard took me through a small forest and stream. There is something about hearing running water this time of year. It is so calming.

Upon arriving, I have to say, the whole place looked so inviting.

I headed straight to their restaurant. It was just what the doctor ordered!

I had the best view!

And the service and tea were perfect.

The visit ended by checking out the orangerie and walking the grounds.

I never noticed the totem pole on the grounds before.

It was also really nice to happen-upon one of their four-legged residents.

That was a good, leisurely walk and a lovely place to take photos.
