Gairloch, The Highlands

My trip north meant getting to Ullapool. On our way, we made a quick stop at Gairloch. Gairloch means “Short Loch” in Gaelic. It is a small village on the shores of Loch Gairloch in Wester Ross, in the North-West Highlands. It’s a popular summer destination but at the end of September, there are very few people to be found.

This was the case with this stop. It was a bit of a giggle because it was SO WINDY. Regardless, we ventured out to take in the view and wonder. The beach and the colour of the water were just delightful despite having to wrestle with Mother Nature.

Lots of Rain means Lots of Green in the Capital

Well the Scottish capital has seen a lot a rain this month. I think more than usual.

As a result, Edinburgh is so green!

There may not be many flowers but there is something to be said for being surrounded by nature when you are in the middle of the city.

Walking the new Calton burial grounds

It makes for a such a delightful city stroll

The rain has definitely worked its magic.

A Dusting of Snow in Edinburgh

Today we all woke up to a dusting of snow in the Scottish capital. I clearly have become obsessed with the weather here. It’s because it lends itself to a lot of conversation! I mean a lot!

A quick scan of my container garden with my morning coffee wonderfully demonstrated the multiple personalities of Mother Nature! My daffodils and hyacinth are blooming while the garden pots are coated with a layer of snow. Lol!

A walk around Holyrood Park which you know is one of my favourites in the city. On this occasion, I wanted to see it with this layer of snow.

The kids were out having snowball fights. The dogs were more playful than ever! How could I not smile?

The crags looked magical.

Painting in the Scottish Capital

Finally, before I go, I had to take this photo! Only in Scotland can you have a layer of snow across the city but find people hard at work painting their outside fence!

Love it!

Whacky Weather in the Scottish Capital

Is that a word? Whacky? Well I’m not being reprimanded by my spellcheck so it is! And it is appropriate. We’ve had all four seasons in a given day and at times within the same hour. I kid you not.

The other day, we had sunshine followed by hail, back to sunshine then rain. It is no wonder that my container garden is confused!

Hail in my container garden
Constant state of confusion!

So not only is Mother Nature developing multiple personalities, we all are! Putting on layers then taking off layers, hats on hats off. Yesterday was a day of continuous physical rewind! 😂

Palm tree in Hillside, Edinburgh

We are a city where you can see palm trees (yes! Indeed!) while tending to your snowdrops and crocuses, knowing it can snow any minute 👀.

I have to chuckle, it is also a place where you will see people in winter jackets and shorts! I finally understand which is scary.

Predictable, we are not.

Love it!

A Wee Giggle About Scottish Weather

I can only describe Scottish weather as having multiple personalities that can appear all at once.

I kid you not.

One second it is Winter, then the next second we can have Spring showers, ooopps then it is back to sunshine! In fact that might have been Summer!

It totally confuses our plants!

“Let’s go outside, it will be fun”

In fact it confuses all of us. Scottish weather is so unpredictable. You never know what to wear. However, some are more dramatic than others about it!

“I’m so cold!”

Love it!
